Default gw melted my video card!

Hahaha I just thought that this was raelly funny.

I was playing and all of a sudden my screen started flashing and my computer shut down. It wouldnt start back up...so after a few days of troubleshooting I ended up taking out my videocard and using the old one...and it worked.

My computer wont start up when I try to use my good videocard, so im stuck with integrated. But I found it funny, because any comp I put my videocard in wont start up...its totally busted

RIP ATI RADEON X700PRO

Wow, that really sucks. I must say though, if it happened with GW it was probably coming at you anyway. Did you find out why it overheated? Playing too long or maybe a cooling issue?
At least you have a good excuse to buy a really kickass new videocard gl

No money...but I highly doubt it was a cooling issue...as my computer doesnt have.......a case.... it still has a lot of fans though :\

I really cant figure out why it happened with gw and not a high end game...

Hey Mandy - I don't know if this is good news or not, but my sis just purchased an ATI X1800, and she couldn't even RUN Guild Wars with it. Finally she was able, and the card just ate itself. She sent it back to ATI, using an older card until they sent it back to her. Now, she's scared to put it back in, ain't that a slice? She can use it in its normal capacity, to record TV shows, but if she wants to game, she's got to shut the system down, put the old card in, and power it back up.

Have you gone to their website to see if it's still under warranty? Mine was, and I bought it almost 3 years ago. All I had to do was put in the serial number, and their system spit out an RMA at me. It's worth a shot!

As suggested, get in contact with the manufacturer (or ATI if you bought the card from them direct) Most graphics cards come with at least another year's worth of "manufacturer warranty" on top of the "retailer warranty". Some have 3-5 years even.

Call the manufacturer up, they will usually be able to tell you if it still has some warranty from the serial number(s) on the card, and then you can get it fixed from them. In some cases they even just replace it with a brand new card, or newer one as happened to me when my old radeon 9700 broke

I was wanting pictures of charred plastic, thanks for getting my hopes up.

GW probably does it because it because it's a resource heavy game. From the extensive visual detail, I think that this game is just one of those that's a bit harder on your graphics card than most, hence the common problem of overheating.

Had ATi R9800Pro, died when playing FarCry. Had memory heat sinks on it, huge VGA Cooler on it, not overclocked, and it just died, case fans and everything else working great, the card just said it's time to go. o_O

Might be some flaw in ATi's design, happy with my GF6800 now atleast

The 9800pro can get pretty hot. I still have one in my second game box (Daughter's puter now) and I made sure from day one that I have enough power and the PCI slot(and slot cover) next to it was open for extra cooling. It is 3 years old now and still running great.

gw has always been heavy on the gpu -- i had to replace the fan on my 6600gt after a year of constant usage. i might have to add that the primary pc here is running almost 24/7 and the normal retail fans are just not made to hold longer than 12 months under these conditions.

to the op: sucks to hear it melted your card. how old was the card?
are you sure your gpu fan was working properly?
weak psus (power supply units) might work nicely until you have several usb devices running while you push your system to the limit.

oddly gw gets more temp on the card than anything else.
6600gt with zalman vf700cu temps#

standby windows (multiple tasks open) ~34°C
gw ~47°C fully rendering (1280x1024, everything maxed out)*
nfsu:mw ~42°C fully rendering (1280x1024 almost maxed settings)
es3 ~40°C fully rendering (1280x1024, everything maxed out)
rdkf ~38°C (well, not real 3d rendering but i thought i add it ^^)
cinema4d rendering ~44°C

gw is stressful on the card but i still hope they add dx9 shaders for the new chapter.

*january crash issue with my system, running gw on 2nd pc atm (tried 20 diffrent drivers, lots of diffrent bios settings, reinstalled my whole system,... hoping for the next build to run)

Good point Uzul. When I am done with the game I get out of the game and my system gets real quiet. My primary system has a X800XL and that card makes noise when in the game. I do not fear it frying too much. The BTX style case has great air flow.

But any video card as far as I am concerned you should keep the PCI slot next to it open for more air flow.

Not having a case does not mean it is not a cooling issue. It just means you have more open aire contact. Fans Imo are fairly useless with no case, you really are not getting CFM with not enclosure. One of the whole points of a case is to not only protect your hardware but create a minuature enviroment in which can be correctly exchanged for cool fresh air in the micro enviroment.

My old Radeon 9600 Pro is still chugging along after 2+ years (even runs F.E.A.R. great) . Same goes for my daughters 9600se. Both do a nice job on GW.
